Our Story

OUR STORY

Back in May 2014, there was a photo circulating on Facebook that caught my attention. It was 2 southern-looking gentlemen on a floating picnic table. They were using small aluminum pontoons for floats, a small electric trolling motor, all with an umbrella attached.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM SOME FRIENDS

In June 2014 I was living in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and didn’t have access to aluminum pontoons. However, I did have old Hobie Cat plastic pontoons. A couple of friends helped me drag them out of the bush and took them to my house. Over the next two days, we built the first table and floated it in my swimming pool. I had several friends over for a bbq dinner and ate in the pool at the picnic table.

AMT WATERCRAFT WAS BORN

The following day we had people very interested in our project and friends started helping out and donating items. We had a gasoline 4 hp outboard motor, a small grill, an umbrella and headed to the beautiful beach of Cane Garden Bay Tortola to launch it in the ocean. It was amazing. The reception we got from the entire beach and other boats were amazing.

NOW YOU CAN TAKE A TRIP ON A SOL-R-CAT

SOLAR INTERNATIONAL PICNIC TABLE TRAVEL WAS A DOCUMENTED SUCCESS

The demand and interest over these tables led me to some guys in Orlando Florida that were going to build me the dream boat. Not quite but we did try. We made around 7 boats each a little different and with different features. Fold-down table for a deck was very popular. Half the table fold-down version. Remote-controlled version and 1 new Solar Version for me in the islands. It was a hit. I quickly had a solar company donating panels for advertising and started delivering pizzas for Dominos to sailboats and the beach. I have 1000’s of nautical miles riding on floating picnic tables and now know what it takes to build the best table.

SOLAR POWER CHANGED THE GAME

I decided to go on a “long” journey with it and circumnavigate the island. It took three days. The picnic table was now getting popular and I was interviewed several times and was in the BVI Welcome Magazine in an article on "fun things to do at the beach". I was eventually invited to St. John United States Virgin Islands by a solar company to attend a solar exhibition. I traveled internationally on the table and checked into the US Customs and Border Patrol in Cruz Bay St.John with my passport. Because I had made it and didn’t have any registration or paperwork I was allowed entry as a kayak. It was very funny to hear the officers' comments. I did manage to make it back to Tortola and had to check back in there.

THE MAIDEN VOYAGE WAS A SUCCESS

People wanted to rent it. People wanted to buy it. People wanted me to make them one. That’s when the light turned on and I knew I was onto something. I quickly found more pontoons and built a second one. A good friend of mine hooked me up with some older panels. We built a roof out of 2x4’s and mounted the 250 watts of solar power on it. It was awesome. No more running extension cords or humping batteries around. It just worked.
